WEEE Closing the Loop- Next Steps in Recycling
EIT Raw Materials: Idea-Camp “Next steps in WEEE – closing the loop” in the Aachener EurogressCopyright: Cyberlab IMA/ZLW & IfU
On September 8th, 2016, the EIT Raw Materials Idea Camp "Next steps in WEEE - Closing the loop" took place in Aachen (Eurogress) together with the aRAWness workshop - both events funded by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) Raw Materials. The leading organizations of the event were the Institute for Process Metallurgy and Metal Recycling (IME) and the Cybernetics Lab (IMA/ZLW & IfU) of RWTH Aachen University. The aim of the Idea Camp was to identify and discuss the current scientific and economic level in the field of recycling of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), and to develop measures to raise the society’s awareness regarding the use of raw materials.
The event was opened by the Rector of RWTH Aachen University Prof. Ernst Schmachtenberg. His speech was followed by the thematic introduction of EIT Raw Materials CCO Tomas Jensen who moderated the plenary session on the topic of WEEE recycling. In the plenary session the current state of research and development in the WEEE recycling were presented. In addition to the industrial perspective, reported by Pascal Leroy of the WEEE Forum and Dr. Eschen of Aurubis AG, Prof. Thomas Pretz (Department of Processing and Recycling) and Prof. Bernd Friedrich (Institute of Process Metallurgy and Metal Recycling) pointed out the specific importance of the interface between processing and metallurgy for WEEE.
In subsequent workshops with the two thematic focuses "Technical Research" and "Society Awareness" concrete ideas for future projects (e.g. the nation-wide identification of interfaces for research institutions) were developed by the 60 participants. Within the coming months these ideas will be submitted to the EIT for further elaboration.
For further questions on the event, the RWTH team of EIT Raw Materials will provide information willingly. Don’t hesitate to contact us.
